Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Windows

What is the difference between vinyl and fiberglass windows? Should I install fiberglass or vinyl windows in my home? Many home and business owners wonder which type of window they should install. Below, we’ve outlined a comparison of vinyl windows and fiberglass windows so that you can make the best decision for your replacement project.
Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Windows: Maintenance
Both windows are extremely easy to maintain, but the winner will really depend on what type of window you have. For example, casement windows will also be easier to maintain and clean, regardless of the material, than other types including single-hung and double-hung windows.
Edge: Tie (Both)
Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Windows: Colors & Finishes
Colors and finishes will differ based on the manufacturer’s options for each window type. At Weather Shield, we offer a wide range of colors and finishes for both our vinyl and fiberglass product lines. EnduraShield® is our fiberglass line and exterior finishes are available in five standard colors (White, Tan, Hartford Green, Brick Red, and Craftsman Bronze)—all of which are designed to resist fading, peeling, and flaking. Our Weather Shield Aspire Series™ encompasses our vinyl window selection, and there is a variety of distinctive finishes available (White, Cameo, Tan, Desert Tan, and Heritage Brown).
Edge: Tie (Both—depends on your preferences)
Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Windows: Durability
Over time, the sun can wear down vinyl, and it’s more susceptible to changing weather conditions (see the energy efficiency section below for more information). Fiberglass is a material that will maintain its strength and integrity in every climate. The color and finish of fiberglass is consistent, so if your windows get nicked or scratched, it won’t show as easily because the color underneath is the same as the exterior color and finish. Overall, fiberglass windows offer a level of durability than cannot be matched.
Edge: Fiberglass
Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Windows: Energy Efficiency
While both windows have excellent insulation properties to help lower your energy bills, fiberglass windows have the edge in this category. Fiberglass itself is an insulating material and does not require any thermal barrier like vinyl does. Fiberglass windows expand and contact at rates much lower than that of vinyl windows (up to 800 times less), which means reduced air leakage because your windows will have much fewer gaps from weather changes. Fiberglass windows also don’t transfer heat as easily.
Edge: Fiberglass
Vinyl vs. Fiberglass WindowsCost
Vinyl windows tend to be more affordable than fiberglass windows—in fact, vinyl windows are one of the more affordable types on the market. Either way, the cost of your window replacement will depend on the shape of window and how many windows you are installing.
Edge: Vinyl
So Which Is Better: Fiberglass Windows or Vinyl Windows?
In the end, fiberglass windows have the edge over vinyl windows—both in terms of durability and energy efficiency. That said, each type of window is often purchased to serve different purposes for different people—so fiberglass may not be the best solution for your home or business. All our fiberglass and vinyl windows are built with the same level of craftsmanship right here in the USA and come with a 20-year warranty! Regardless of the choice between fiberglass and vinyl, we are confident that you will love our windows.
